All of the activities below are optional. They are only a sample of what is available to players who are looking for organized opportunities for development and match play. However, many of the activities below provide opportunities for players to meet the off-season expectations, by getting activities knocked off from the player development program and to play matches.
IHSAA regulates how often we can workout as a team during the off-season. During the school year, IHSAA has three limited-contact periods for teams to workout twice per week for two hours each session (max of 4 hours per week). Outside of these periods - coaches are not able to work with players on tennis development UNLESS it is funneled through a separate organization with services open to the public.
Fall limited contact period (September 1 - October 18, 2025): Boys team will be in-season. Girls will be invited to open courts twice per week during this period.
Winter limited contact period (December 8, 2025 - February 7, 2026): Boys and girls will practice together twice per week.
Winter limited contact period extended for spring sports (February 7, 2026 - first girls practice): girls will practice together twice per week leading up to tryouts.
Spring limited contact period (April 6 - May 16, 2026): Girls team will be in-season. Boys will be invited to open courts twice per week during this period.
Throughout the summer we have match play opportunities at Bloomington South most Tuesday Nights (8:00-9:30pm) and Friday mornings (9:00-11:00am). These opportunities are hosted by MC Tennis but are open to all current/up-and-coming South tennis players (ages 10+), as well as all players who are regularly attending MC Tennis Drop-In Clinics.
There is no cost to participate, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!!
While no formal instruction occurs during this time, coaches will be walking around to provide general feedback and organize matches. All participating players must have an up-to-date physical on file to participate!
Matches are played in a timed format - giving players an opportunity to get matches against 3-4 different opponents in a short span of time. These matches can all be submitted to meet match play expectations for off-season team development
All players are encouraged to begin some type of weight training (either through a free option at South, or an independent program).
During the school year: South athletes can register for a specialized weights class with coach permission. Let Coach Corry know if you want permission to register.
During the summer: The South Weights Coach runs a summer weightlifting program that is free for all South athletes.
These clinics are open to the public (ages 10-18) and will have players coming from other schools in surrounding counties. Courts are divided based on skill level. These clinics are offered on a come as you can basis and you can come to 1 session or 20+ sessions.
Clinics are held every Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs from 9:00am-11:00am.
Additional details and registration information are available on the MC Tennis Website
There are numerous tennis coaches in town (including several South coaches) who give private lessons and small group lessons throughout the year. Many of our players are already connected with a private coach. However, if you are searching for a private / small group coach and want help getting connected - visit mctennis.info and fill out the lesson interest form. You can request coaching directly from Coach Corry or from an Assistant Coach and have the ability to sign up with a small-group of friends.
These are paid clinics offered through the IU Tennis Center. For more information please visit the IUTC Website.
We have advanced players that travel to other cities in Indiana for clinics. Some of the more popular options include Tipton Lakes Athletic Club (Columbus, IN), Southside Tennis (Center Gove H.S.) and various offerings in Indianapolis.
USTA hosts a variety of tournaments around the state every month. ALL players are encouraged to play as many tournaments as possible. Each summer, we try to host several USTA single day showdown tournaments here in Bloomington! This is a great opportunity to participate in a local tournament and get a lot of match experience in one day. The IU Tennis Center always host a multi-day summer tournament as well.
If you are new to playing tournaments and are not sure where to start, don't hesitate to reach out. However, most of our JV players should be looking Level 7 or Level 6 tournaments.
Level 7: typically a single-day format, minimum of 2 matches guaranteed (up to 4), typically a condensed match format (pro-set, short-sets, no-ad, etc.), and selection for the tournament occurs from the bottom up (meaning new players without a tournament rating are selected first).
Level 6, the format is typically full matches, can be up to 3 days, and players may be selected based on USTA ranking (higher ranking selected first).
